Maria Montessori opened a children’s house in Rome in 1907. She observed the learning patterns of the first children let into the house based on a method she developed. These children, which were not expected to do well, thrived in the special environment she created. Because of her success, the Montessori teaching method was created. The key to the method’s success is the child’s own desire to learn. Instead of learning in a structured environment, children learn to create their own structure. With a little guidance from an adult, the child learns how to perform tasks on their own. There are a few reminders of classical education in the system, such as learning by repetition, but for the most part, the child is allowed to figure out how they want to learn. This method is supposed to deliver a learning experience that’s closer to a child’s needs.
