We are often told to watch what we eat because of food's effect on our body. But the body isn't the only thing that our diet can impact -- nutrition plays a massive role in the development of our brain, too.

Neuroscience Professor John Stein of University of Oxford agrees that "contributing to dyslexic problems are problems with the nutrition of the brain." In the video below, Stein discusses how we're low on ingesting essential Omega-3 fatty acids, which "constitute about 20% of the make-up of the brain." That type of fatty acid is most prevalent in fish oils, and we as a culture simply don't eat that much fish. When we do incorporate the acids from fish oil, they are moved in and out of the membranes of the brain, and a lack of them can cause severe impairment.

Studies have suggested that this particular brain impairment causes dyslexia or ADHD. Even further, people who have been given supplements of essential fatty acids are typically able to improve their ability to concentrate. Though certainly not a magic cure, it's clear that the addition of fish oils in our diet -- either through actually eating more fish, or through taking fish oil supplements -- could be a way to prevent and improve dyslexic or ADHD problems.
