The state of education for middle and high school students in math and science is inadequate. About 70 percent of students are unprepared for college-level science and math. Students who study at least algebra 2 in high school have a higher chance of obtaining a college degree, 30 percent of college graduates earn a degree in science and engineering and of those graduates, 90 percent of bachelor degree holders in 2009 were men aged 25 or older. In 2008 China had 8 times more students earn a bachelors degree in engineering than the United States. Over 15 of the fastest growing jobs in the United States require post-secondary education. Estimates predict that by 2018 over half of all jobs in the United States will require a post-secondary education and 90 percent of stem jobs in 2018 will go to those with a post-secondary education. The number of scientists writing research papers has dropped and the number of women earning degrees in computer science has risen. Stem education is important, improves the chances of success at work and school and the United States does not have a good enough public education to properly prepare all students to get to it.
