There are different types of neurotransmitters and this infograph provides the information that we need to know. These are the chemicals that allow the transmission of signals from one neuron to the next across synapses. Nine neurotransmitters are described in this graphic. Dopamine produces feelings of pleasure and is usually inhibitory. Glycine is used by neurons in the spinal cord and is inhibitory. Seratonin is involved in many functions including but not limited to mood and appetite, and is inhibitory in pain pathways. Norepinephrine is part of the flight or fights response, and is usually excitatory. Acetylcholine is used to control muscles and regulate memory; it's usually excitatory. Gaba is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain. Glutamate is the most common excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. Adrenaline prepares the body to react to stress.
