Learning a new language as a native English speaker may be easy or difficult based on the language that one is trying to learn. This study places languages into three categories: easy, medium and hard. The easy category is similar to English and takes 24 weeks to become proficient and includes Spanish, French and Italian among others. The Medium category, for languages with significant differences, requires 44 weeks for proficiency and includes Thai, Greek, Polish and Vietnamese (among others). The Hard category is least like English and requires 88 weeks for proficiency and includes Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.
