How to Help Children Stop Comparing Themselves to Others (Infographic)

Comparisons permit us to form a baseline for where we are in life, and where we want to be. It allows us to evaluate ourselves against our peers, against our friends and colleagues, against our fellow students, and against the people we look up to. When our children compare themselves to others, this is just part of normal human behavior. Often what happens is they become aware of not only differences but that one person has “more” while the other one has “less.” This could lead to the feeling of not being enough. As parents, we want to rush in and help our children feel better, but what we can do is support our child’s emotional development by explaining to them that they should only compare themselves to themselves. Encouraging our children to self-compare allows them to see their own growth and claim ownership of their hard work.
