Ever since technology became more prevalent in education, students rely less on handwriting. This has had a negative effect on penmanship but has also negatively impacted reading levels. Handwriting stimulates the brain and allows the repetitive learning that comes with writing to make learning other repetitive tasks that are learned in school much easier for a student proficient in writing.

Other advantages have been found for those that are skilled in putting pen to paper. Those that can write well are able to write essays more quickly and have sharper memories. Students with this skill have been shown to create and apply more complex ideas. These students had a stronger sense of understanding ideas in general and were excellent at visual identification.
