Why do we like music? Music is based on rhythm; all physiological and biological functions are rhythmic. Music is important to many people in many different cultures. According to Leonard Bernstein all languages come from a single source of melody. Even the baby in the arms of its mother begins with melody babble. Music is important for brain function. The brain releases a chemical that gives pleasure when we hear music. Dopamine is a substance released from brain cells that make us feel the pleasure of eating. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that is involved with the emotional reaction to music. Our moods and emotions are affected by the melody of music. We have intense pleasure in response to music.
