There are four main types of medications used to treat ADHD- stimulants, non-stimulants, alpha agonists, and medications that are not specifically intended for ADHD may still be an effective treatment. While many types of ADHD medications alleviate symptoms by targeting the dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain, there are other types, such as the alpha agonists, that do not. All types of ADHD medications have specific pros and cons, and it is up to the patient and his or her doctor to choose the best treatment for his or her specific needs.
