According to research published in NeuroImage, children’s problem solving ability improved dramatically from second to third grade. In fact, study done on 90 children with normal intelligence, equally representing both second and third graders. While second graders treated all problems similarly, third graders showed greater brain engagement in solving complex problems and relied on working memory to solve simple problems making them cross-transfer information between two regions to solve problems efficiently. In fact, more studies are in need for children doing years of schooling and those with developmental problems like dyscalculia and autism.
