Freshmen tackle upper-level math in special course #dyscalculia

There’s a bustling buzz of energy emanating from Malott Hall every Wednesday evening. The sound? It’s students working hard to solve puzzling math equations in Theoretical Linear Algebra and Calculus. Although the math problems would stump even graduate students, this class embrace the opportunity to get wrapped up seeking solutions.

Words like that are music to the ears of John Hubbard, professor of mathematics, who created this course 20 years ago for students who were fascinated by math and weren’t challenged enough by traditional classes.

Math should be both fun and diverse.

Math professor John Hubbard created the class two decades ago for students who needed bigger challenges than their customary math class could provide. The devoted teacher is so hands on that he even wrote the textbook that the students use. Matrices and transformations to the geometry of curves and surfaces are just a handful of topics that the course covers.

Key Takeaways:

1
Students gather every Wednesday for 2 and a half hour for a math session.
2
This group of high school freshmen is tackling graduate student level problems.
