How students, parents can get ready for high school math classes #dyscalculia

High school is scary in itself but think about just how intimidating not only can be the bigger school that your child will be attending or the new students that they will be with but rather the new classes that they will be attending. So how can we help? There are actually many different ways we can help our children prepare better for high school math classes.

If your student is nervous about a new math class, try building up his confidence by revisiting basic concepts, such as addition, subtraction and fractions.

We should be asking why more often. Asking why can help transition into the upper level classes by opening an open dialogue about the classes and the materials. If they can tell you why, then they can tell the teacher why which helps them build the foundation for these classes. Make sure that you and your child brush up on the basics together. This will help add to the foundation that they will go through over the class.

Key Takeaways:

1
Parents can ask students the kind of questions that students will get in high school–questions that ask learners to describe the process they used to form an answer.
2
Parents can encourage students to use the internet help sites that professional tutors use to help students brush up on math basics.
3
While parents can strive to shed their own baggage of math anxiety, parents and students can seek tutoring early in a difficult math course for best results.
