Local students learn about math and science careers #dyscalculia

There’s an ongoing joke among Americans that one never uses Algebra again after they leave school. However, a Raytheon employee named Kandy Roy recently visited Mr. Barnett’s Advanced Algebra class at Newnan High School in Georgia hopes to change that myth. An integral part of the hiring process at the corporation, Roy told the students how valued math and science skills are in post-college life.

Roy introduced the students to the cave, a collaboration center where engineers and scientists from all over the world connect and collaborate on different ideas through a virtual environment.

Kandy Roy visits a school to show how algebra is used post-college.

Roy also focused on the importance of teamwork during her presentation. She played a video that showed how Raytheon engineers work together to produce needed products. Meanwhile Mr. Barnett is advocating for the use of building math teams and group work in his classroom. The students also learned about the cave, a collaboration center for engineers and scientists to work together virtually.

Key Takeaways:

1
Students often question the need for taking math and science courses when they will most likely never use them again. Newnan High School teachers aim to break that barrier.
2
Kandy Roy , a Newnan High alumni, paid a visit to local advanced algebra students. She is a HR representative at a cyber security and defense agency in Boston, MA.
3
Kandy’s visit aimed to make students interested in engineering and other STEM fields, so hopefully they pay more attention in algebra class.
