In 2017 about 20,000 more students took the Smarter Balance Assessment. When new students enter new public school systems they can be at different learning levels. Results from 2017 showed the second year of successful assessment. The department delayed the release of the new school ratings because of disagreements between the state and districts.

Forty percent of Washoe County’s students in grades 3-8 were proficient in math in 2017. In English forty-nine were proficient. Hayes said parents can expect to see growth by next year Hayes said parents can expect to see growth. Due to the state’s transition to new end-of-course exams, no data was collected. ACT scores showed the third consecutive year of decline for the school district.
Assessment tests continue to be a controversy.
