Dyslexia Action responds to the Access to Work inquiry

Dyslexia Action has researched and commented on the Department of Work and Pensions’ program, Access to Work program which is directed towards those individuals whom may have such learning differences, for example dyslexia. The Access to Work program is geared towards businesses, Universities, Job Centers and other employers who may come in contact with individuals and/or employees who have dyslexia or other learning difficulties.

The department for Work and Pensions needs to find a better way to tell sufferers of dyslexia about its Access to Work scheme, says Dyslexia Action

Dyslexia Action has identified some issues or concerns with the Department of Work and Pensions’ Access to Work program. One of the key points Dyslexia Action commented on was the fact that most individuals are not aware that such a support program exists. Another point is the application process for the program is a paper form and this may present some concerns and problems for the individuals seeking the assistance. Also, Dyslexia Action expressed concerns over the training and coaching the Employers/Businesses are receiving to help those with such learning difficulties.
Access to Work is designed to help long-term disabled people, including those with dyslexia, start a new job or remain in employment by offering practical support which goes beyond the ‘reasonable adjustments’ which employers are required to make by law.
