There have been efforts to do away with the gifted programs at some schools. The goal of getting rid of the classes was to make things less hierarchal. Students were still allowed to do whatever they wished and take the classes that they feel challenged them the most. There was evidence found early on those people from certain races avoided taking the classes that were for gifted kids and that was striking to all the administrators.
