Matthew Effects are Powerful – Act Early

The Matthew Effects are a very powerful piece of research. These effects can greatly help children with difficulty in learning and in child development? For example, think of a child named William. In preschool, William did not encounter any difficulty. He participated in most of the preschool educational games. Later on William started to understand basic word patterns.

Children who get learning benefit from learning and schooling, while those who get left behind continue to struggle. This is known as the “Matthews Effect”, so named because of a biblical reference.

Now think of another child named Beth very different from William. In preschool, Beth resisted when her parents tried to read to her. She would find another activity in which she could do. Beth would get nervous when letter and sound activities were being done. She saw other children understanding letters and sounds and she wasn’t. Read the article to learn how the Matthew Effects can help children.
The negative cycle continued all the way through elementary school. While Beth was formerly “diagnosed” and classified by fourth-grade, it was already late. There was a wide gap between Beth and many of the other kids around her.
