Learning in itself is a constant process where not only do the students learn new lessons and strategies but the school district officials will learn as well the teachers themselves. This was the case for Albert Lea Area Schools where the district is implementing new math strategies for elementary students that will create a more positive learning atmosphere.

The NCTM practices are an additional resource that is tied to our textbook as well as other resources that we are using to implement the Minnesota math standards,” Quisley said. “These practices help to support math as an active learning process, in which each student builds upon his or her own knowledge with feedback from peers, teachers, other adults, as well as themselves

“Numbers Talk” helps create positive learning atmosphere for math students.

A math specialist in the district says that she is bringing routine to the math classes there at the elementary school. Since her arrival at the district three years ago she brought a program called “Numbers Talk”. This program was a way for students to show and even explain their strategies solving math problems.

Key Takeaways:

1
The Albert Lea school district is implementing math strategies to help children view learning math in a positive light.
2
The strategies focus on reminding children that math class is about learning, not performing, and encouraging them to come up with alternative ways to approach problems.
3
Math specialists, such as those helping the Albert Lea school district with their new strategies, want to expand positive math learning environments across all grade levels and districts.
