The University of Alaska Anchorage is offering the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program’s Acceleration Academy to students for dual high school and college credit. The hope is to excited students about the subjects and drum up interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers. Women, in particular, are woefully underrepresented in STEM careers.

“One of the things that I really strongly believe in is that we need to have more girls interested in math, science, and engineering. We’ve got half the population that is way underrepresented in those fields and that means that we’ve got a whole bunch of talent … not being encouraged the way they need to.”
~President Obama

University of Alaska program seeks to interest students in STEM careers.

One female student at the academy had high praise for the program for their inclusion of women, stating that she has seen boys get preferential treatment in other areas of life. Another woman interviewed said that her high school principal encouraged her to attend the academy upon discovering her love of math.
